Introduction of ETIAS in 2025

In an effort to bolster border security while streamlining travel within the Schengen Zone, the European Union (EU) is set to launch the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in mid-2025.

Who Needs ETIAS?

This new requirement will apply to travelers from countries that currently enjoy visa-free access, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia. Those planning to visit EU member states, along with non-EU countries like Switzerland and Norway, must secure ETIAS authorization.

Understanding ETIAS

ETIAS serves as an electronic travel authorization rather than a visa. This pre-screening process assesses travelers before they reach a Schengen Zone destination. Upon approval, ETIAS is electronically linked to a traveler’s passport and remains effective for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Distinguishing the Schengen Zone from the EU

It’s important to note the difference between the EU and the Schengen Zone. The EU is a political and economic union of 27 member states that collaborate in areas such as trade and legislative matters. Conversely, the Schengen Zone is a collective of 27 countries, including non-EU nations like Norway and Switzerland, focused on eliminating internal border checks for free and easy travel.

While most EU nations are part of the Schengen Zone, some are not. Ireland remains outside this area, and while Cyprus is expected to join soon, it has not yet done so. Romania and Bulgaria entered the Schengen Zone partially by air and sea on March 31, 2024, and are anticipated to fully integrate by January 2025, pending final EU approval.

ETIAS Requirement Details

Travelers from over 60 visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, will be required to apply for ETIAS for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in Schengen Zone nations.

Residents or passport holders from Greece, Cyprus, or any Schengen Zone nation are exempt from ETIAS requirements.

How to Apply for ETIAS

Applying for ETIAS will be a straightforward, fully online process similar to systems like the U.S. ESTA or Canadian eTA. Applicants will need to provide basic details from their passports and pay a fee of €7. Those under 18 years of age or over 70 will probably be exempt from this fee, although they still need to secure the authorization.
