Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a €350 million initiative to modernise school infrastructure, beginning with 645 schools in 249 municipalities.

The project, named the “Marietta Giannakou” programme, aims to improve outdated school facilities across the country.

During a visit to the 8th Primary School of Nea Philadelphia on Thursday, Mitsotakis emphasised the urgency of upgrading educational infrastructure, particularly for older schools. The programme includes a €100 million donation from the Hellenic Bank Association, and the first renovated schools are expected to be delivered by September 2025.

“It is time for a substantial intervention in our school infrastructure,” Mitsotakis stated, highlighting the importance of the initiative, which honours Marietta Giannakou, a politician closely linked to public education reform in Greece.

A Major Step for Greek Schools

Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, who accompanied the prime minister, noted that the project—initially launched with a €250 million budget—was expanded with additional funding. The first phase will prioritize more than 600 schools, covering over 80% of municipal needs.

“This is a crucial first step,” Pierrakakis said, adding that the upgrades will include improvements to classrooms, courtyards, and digital infrastructure.

The initiative marks a significant investment in enhancing learning environments for Greek students, ensuring that schools are safer, more modern, and better equipped for future generations.
