Three major cultural heritage projects on Corfu have been fast-tracked for restoration under the 2021–2027 National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), signaling a new phase in preserving the island’s historic landmarks.

Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni recently visited the Ionian Islands regional headquarters on Corfu, meeting with Regional Governor Giannis Trepeklis and Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gkikas to confirm the accelerated pipeline of these projects.

The projects include the restoration of the Old Fortress Bridge, reconstruction and enhancement of the Rolina building, and restoration and promotion of Villa Kokotou.

The Old Fortress Bridge, the top priority, will undergo structural stabilization and pedestrian path upgrades, with tender documents expected by month-end and a budget exceeding 3 million euros.

The Rolina building’s reconstruction is budgeted at 6 million euros, while Villa Kokotou’s restoration and promotional works are valued at over 1 million euros.

All three initiatives are slated for immediate inclusion in the NSRF funding program, with an expected start soon.

On his part, Governor Trepeklis highlighted the longstanding cooperation with the culture ministry, recalling efforts to secure Corfu’s Old Town UNESCO World Heritage status. “Preserving the entire historic center for future generations remains a shared priority,” he said.

“Corfu holds a unique cultural heritage,” Minister Mendoni said, underscoring the government’s commitment. “Our goal is to keep it vibrant—through solid planning, timely funding, and projects that serve both citizens and visitors.” She highlighted that the partnership with the regional authority is focused on safeguarding cultural assets while supporting local development.
