As part of his regular weekly review, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the University of York’s interest in opening a branch in Greece, following his government’s passage of a 2024 law allowing the establishment of private universities.

“Another top public university from abroad, the British University of York, has expressed interest in opening branches in Greece. Ranked 146th globally in 2025, York has been recognized for its excellence in research and teaching by official British institutions,” said Mitsotakis.

He added that the university plans to launch its programs in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, before expanding to Athens.

“Initially, it will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Thessaloniki through three departments: business administration, sciences, and law and humanities. As the university expands to Athens, it will introduce undergraduate and postgraduate programs in computer science.”
